He was raised in an urban American Indian neighborhood and is a member of the Oglala Lakota Tribe. Luke began writing in his early 30’s and cultivated his marginalized humorous yet poignant verse through spoken word venues and Poetry Slam. He often uses his narrative prose style to address contemporary Native American themes. Poet and novelist Adrian C. Louis once commented on Luke’s writings as “Poetry for the disenfranchised, those who don't have a voice, his poems are strong and true.” In 2005, Luke was the first spoken-word poet to receive an Archibald Bush Foundation individual artist fellowship in literature. He was a featured poet at the prestigious Geraldine R. Dodge 12th Biennial Poetry Festival in 2008. Luke currently resides in Oakland, California.
